THURSDAY FEBRUARY 12 - FRIDAY FEBRUARY 27, 2015

THE CHICAGO ANGELS PROJECT

Josef Glimer Gallery, 207 west Superior Street, Chicago IL 60654

Participating Artists: Lee Tracy, Doug Fogelson, Chris Hefner, Marvin Tate & Teresa James

In 2014, the Chicago Police Department reported 2500 shootings reported in Chicago through Dec. 13, 2014, a 13 percent increase from its 2013 numbers.  While homicides decreased to the lowest numbers since 1965 shootings continue to grow and menace our most vulnerable youth living in our most challenged low-income communities of color. In the midst of this on going violence, ThinkArt in partnership with The Arts Palette presents Uplift Community High School student artists’ series of mosaic linoleum relief prints that represent the spirits of youth claimed to senseless violence on the streets of Chicago. These prints, presented alongside works by noted Chicago artists, all respond to the horror of the continued youth violence in Chicago.

STUDIO VISIT

-------------

WEDNESDAY APRIL 1, 2015

An evening with MATT WOODWARD in his home studio

Matt’s work is about space and about the way architecture, through a relationship with the space it occupies, is capable of forming an impression of time. The images in his work come straight out of the cityscape, and taken in their original context, as public monuments or as symbols of affluence, represent a specific time and space. Matt’s interest though, lies in removing these objects from their context and presenting them in such a way that any reference that would firmly locate them in history is called into question.  He takes these images back to his studio where they mean nothing and where they depend on a particular story to define them and guide them out of anonymity. He lays them in a graphite bed that he’s made for them, then begins to pull the image back out by means of reductive drawing. The use of reductive drawing is an attempt to mirror the push and pull of deconstruction and reconstruction that shapes the ever changing city. The city occupies a particular time, and is constantly ruined and put back together. All the while it is developing a memory of that process and is recording its own indelible sense of loss. The drawing then becomes its own record of the effort it took to get it up there on the wall.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 22, 2015

An evening with SUSAN GILES in her Hyde Park Art Center studio

Sculpture is said to be the expression of an identity, expressing its beauty through the connection of life and form. This idea is certainly true in the works of Susan Giles, with each sculpture embodying life as a mélange of cultural experiences and search for identity, and form defined by reconstructing fragments of our memory impacted by iconic architecture.

The result is a series of impeccable sculptures, grounded yet delicate. Susan Giles has indeed attained certain harmonies. Her works are a pure creation of her spirit and the quintessence of her identity.

FRIDAY MAY 1, 2015

An evening with MARVIN TATE in his home

Marvin creates poetry from the commonplace. Whether the objects are selected with great care or whether they fall together by total accident, the resulting pieces point to certain ideas and certain attitudes unique to Marvin’s existence. His works speak of personal and family history as well as broader themes of cultural and political segregation and references African American history while addressing his own identity as a black man in Chicago. His assemblages personify the human existential journey while embracing beauty in obscure settings. artistmarvintate.com

WEDNESDAY MAY 13, 2015

DANIEL KNOX & LIAM HAYES @ Virgin Hotel, 203 N. Wabash, 25th Floor

Long known for darkly distorting traditional American popular song styles, Daniel Knox employs a new, more wide-ranging sonic palette on his latest work. The ten songs on Daniel Knox feature his powerful and unique baritone with an array of brass, strings, synthesizers, his usual band, and guest contributions from Brett Sparks (The Handsome Family) and Thor Harris (Bill Callahan, Swans, Shearwater). Knox has scored for film and theater and has performed with artists such as Jarvis Cocker, the Handsome Family, Richard Buckner, Swans, Rasputina, Josephine Foster, Jon Langford, Nina Nastasia, Rufus Wainwright, Marc Ribot and Andrew Bird. danielknox.com

In the mid 90’s, Liam Hayes started gaining fans and grabbing the attention of major labels while making music under the name Plush here in his native Chicago. Because he’s been guarded with the press and avoids social media, he hasn’t gotten the recognition that many think he deserves. Now based in Milwaukee, the man some call a “mastermind” has released a new album of stripped-down music that's all power pop and no frills. liamhayesandplush.com

At times mild and light-hearted, this adrenaline-infused spectacle is not to be missed.
