TAP presents:
THE LECTURE SERIES
COMING IN 2017
In support of The Floating Museum, TAP presents a lecture series on art collecting and museums.
The series has been reworked to provide the underpinnings for a robust conversation about “What is a Museum?”
in a historical context and the evolution of collectors, collecting and the museums in which public collections reside.
The lectures cover Europe, America and Chicago, looking at the “who/what/when/where” of museum development.
Presented by Christine Benoodt
Christine Benoodt is an independent curator and art collection manager whose interest in supporting and developing Chicago’s artistic strength aligns well with TAP’s mission to connect artists and patrons. After almost 20 years leading creative production teams in the marketing communications business to award-winning success, Chris obtained a Masters in Art History with Distinction from Christie’s London/University of Glasgow in 2012, and completed a certificate course at Sotheby’s London in Art Law. She subsequently completed internships at Salon Vert, a private contemporary gallery in London, and The Haven Art Group, a Chicago firm specializing in art collection management and fine art insurance claims adjustment. She has been a volunteer Master Docent at Chicago’s Loyola University Museum of Art for eight years. Chris is currently pursuing her accreditation with the American Society of Appraisers.
The History of Museums: Our European Roots
Collecting habits and customs will be discussed in the context of European history due to its dominant influence on America. Beginning with the Renaissance and covering the geo-political changes through the 19th Century, this talk provides a solid base of understanding for subsequent developments in collecting habits and institutionalization.
Museums in America, City to City
Who were the first collectors in America? How did the young country establish itself as a civilized culture? How did museums in the US begin? What is Chicago’s place in the history of art and culture in the US? How did that start and what are we doing today?
Museums in Chicago: Establishing a Cultural Legacy
Includes the previous history of Chicago’s cultural institutions
including the Art Institute and other museums, with a focus on the DuSable Museum.
The lecture will take place in the home of a Chicago collector.
