A Seat at the Table
The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. This historic centennial offers an opportunity to commemorate a milestone of democracy while acknowledging the turgid path of exclusion that was created by discounting the 15th Amendment – the Abolitionist Bill. The refusal of congress to place both bills in the statute gave rise to divisiveness and continued inequality.
Major programs, projects and initiatives will commemorate this historical centennial.
The 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative (WVCI), a collaboration of women centered institutions, organizations, and scholars across the US, along with the College Art Association (CAA), the preeminent international leadership organization in the visual arts that promotes arts through advocacy, intellectual engagement and a commitment to diversity, will lead this nationwide celebration. Half of the CAA's 2020 programming will be dedicated to women!
International Women’s Day (IWD), a worldwide event observed annually on March 8, has been celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women since the early 20th century.
In Chicago, a group of female artists and women from institutions across the city led by artist Carron Little, has organized IWD projects since 2017 and is now developing ideas for a 2020 public art campaign that will celebrate this historic centennial.
To raise funds for this public art campaign, a series of twenty fundraising dinners for women are being organized by select Chicago women in the arts.
Titled A Seat at the Table, each dinner party will raise funds for the 2020 public art campaign and special events celebrating the centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage and their contribution to arts and culture.
